Design Story
The Akari A Pendant Light is a masterpiece of Japanese craftsmanship. Each shade is meticulously handcrafted from washi paper, derived from the inner bark of the mulberry tree, and shaped over sculpted wooden forms. The result is a luminous, organic form that casts a warm, diffused glow, transforming any space into a serene sanctuary.
The process begins with making washi paper from the inner bark of the mulberry tree. Bamboo ribbing is stretched across sculptural molded wood forms, and the paper is cut into strips and glued onto both sides of the framework. Once dry, the wooden form is removed, leaving a resilient paper form that can be collapsed and packed flat for shipping.
